DOWNLOADABLE MP3'S : MTV has suddenly done a 180-degree turn and gone from 3rd or 4th gear straight into reverse, stripping the gear box in the process but achieving the remarkably noteworthy feat of grinding the continued progress of insipid music mindless to a complete halt. Woe be unto me for faulting their motives - I applaud their sudden embrace of the Backstreet backlash after a year of pretending it didn't even exist. Yet I must question their motives anyway because if they were ignoring the voice of intelligent music consumers and cultural critics until now it must have been in their (profitable) best interest to turn a deaf ear. The only way you can make a deaf ear like that hear something is to present the listener with an even more ludicrously profitable scenario which ultimately involves a greater pimping of music than heretofore already conceived of or executed.
DOWNLOADABLE MP3'S : Guess what? MTV is the pimp, hip-hop is being whored, Eminem has quite willingly made himself the hoe.Six years ago less than 1% of people in his adopted hometown of Detroit could have told you who he was. Three years ago less than 1% of rap music fans would have recognized his name if mentioned in a category of "best rappers in the United States." Even a scant year ago his penetration of this shady (no pun intended) music world was not yetTkae your point and add to it....create a spectacle, and up that ante.......correctbut now MTV are doing it from both angles.....MTV have the pop bands....MTV now have a non-pop band (eminem) that Pop fans love.....and people will want to see whats happening....Eminem on the Pop industry is like Chino XL beating on cripples.......and people will lap it upand both artists will get bought.....they cross reference each other......andeach speak negatively.....MTV has gone WWF on us DOWNLOADABLE MP3'S : I hadn't even thought of it that way, but I couldn't have said it better. History has proven out that any pop phenomenon will have an assuredbacklash, usually of equal magnitude to the initial hype. It can be years, months, weeks, and in some cases, it's instantaneous(read: Hanson). Justwhen that furious burst of popularity reaches it's crest, however, the wavebreaks and Vanilla Ice's sorry ass is dashed against the rocks. It'sinevitable, and anyone who's going to make large sums of money in theentertainment industry knows when that high water mark is coming and placestheir chips accordingly. Look at disco. When those first few records started coming out it wasthe hottest new thing to hit the clubs and many predicted it was the futureof pop music. In hindsight, it was too much, too fast, however, and wequickly had "Death Before Disco" rallies, complete with vinyl-blastingfestivities. Yesterday's icons are skewered on today's ever changing senseof style and what's hip. Admittedly, MTV has been ruthless in it's mutiny of bubblegum pop, butfrankly they couldn't get away with it if it wasn't the current direction ofthe collective pop consciousness. They have their thumb planted firmly onthe pulse of teen/preteen white america, and the results are in: theBackstreet Boy's days are numbered, and it's only a matter of time before wesee who's waiting in the wings to replace them. Eminem's success is the result of A)impeccable timing B) his lack ofmelanin and C) his considerable ability. I don't think his gimmick allowsfor much versatility, and it _will_ become played out, just in time for theyouth to find a new sacred cow to sacrifice. And when it does, I'll stillbe rocking MC Serch with a smug smile. DOWNLOADABLE MP3'S : Call me a motherfucker I'll say "Yeah I fucked your moms",This is what I'm getting at Chris - does MTV have their "thumb on the pulse of teen consciousness" or is MTV pulling the strings and DECIDING what the pulse of teen conciousness is? Did they make a deliberate decision to skewer bubblegum pop because Eminem's new album came along?I get the feeling without it they would have continued happily forward.I've felt for a long time that MTV doesn't play to trends, it makes trends and expects the teenagers of America to follow blindly along. For some reason, they do.The inevitable question is whether the same hip-hop heads who supported him on the way up will support him on the way down when he's not trendy and MTV-hip anymore. He's already won a Grammy so there's not much place to go from there but down (from a music industry POV, not my own). DOWNLOADABLE MP3'S : You should change that teen comment to pre-teen. I'm 18 and Mtv doesn'tplay anything I even remotely like unless it's 3 or 4 in the morning, when the break out decent videos.Good point. The target range on MTV is more like 6-15. By the timeyou get to 16 and up, it gets progressively harder to relate to it.I'm +sincerely+ looking forward to getting the Dish and having M2.I doubt I'll ever watch MTV again after that."Steve 'Flash' Juon" wrote in message...True, I watch very little MTV only Yo!, Brand:New and The Late Lick. I willbe gettong Digital very soon and hope to be getting M2 as well.I'm sorry, but check your opinion polls again. Britney Spears just sold half amillion records in her first day. The Backstreet Boys aren't going anywherejust yet.
