The mp3.lycos.com server logs could also prove extremely usefulto the RIAA other ways. It would also identify who the high-volume illegalMP3 Web sites are and provide evidence to convict these folks. I suspect thatmost MP3 sites don't keep server logs, but that should be no problem nowbecause Lycos is doing the work instead. Wow!

It lookslike the IFPI is being a bully here.)I think it's only a matter of time before Lycos is asked to turn overthe logs. For their sake, I hope they haven't made the mistake ofdeleting any of these server log files. Yet more legal troubles!I think the moral of the story here is for Web sites operators to bevery careful about what information is logged in the first place. Younever know what might come back to bite you in the butt!Actually, the best thing for Lycos would probably be to delete these logsfrequently and regularly according to pre-existing policy. The next bestthing might be to create such a policy. If those logs are for internalaccounting and auditing purposes, Lycos should be under no obligation toretain them for the convenience of another party.
