MP3 AND DOWNLOADS : EMusic seemed to offer just that - they claimed that 50% of what you paygoes to the artist. The quality of their downloads seemed pretty good too,far better than I could have got by declicking the original LPs, though oneparticular artist's downloads were really naff.So I was quite happy to pay on a per download basis while eMusic were doingthat, but they've now turned it into a subscription service and theircatalogue is too narrow to make that a sensible proposition. So I tookadvantage of their introductory offer to download everything I wanted andthen closed my account.A great pity, I would much rather pay for just the track(s) I want,without risking paying for the rest of a CD, possibly unheard, and findingthat it only had the one decent track on it, or paying for a subscriptionwhich condemned me to paying for the privilege of downloading a load ofstuff I didn't want.
MP3 AND DOWNLOADS : There is still Liquid Audio, but you need to be aware of certain thingsbefore going down that path.First, unlike eMusic where you download MP3, you download a *.lqt file,for which you need a player to listen to it or burn it to CD, to get whichyou need to register (as I recall, free, or maybe it was a small one-off).If you decide to do this, ensure that you choose the 'small site' option( I can't remember exactly what thay call it, but it means that you canplayback downloads on any of your PCs, as long as you have installed theplayer and copied the licence file into place - the reason you need thisoption even if you only have one PC is that you can copy off the LA musicand licence files, rebuild the PC, copy them back and still have it work.)
MP3 AND DOWNLOADS : Second, some of the downloads can be quite restrictive - make sure thatyou can play what you want for ever and burn it to CD before paying todownload it - or are only available in the US.There are also free time-bound downloads which you can only play for a monthor so.I preferred the early EMusic system - I'd rather not have therestrictions, I'd rather download straight MP3s - but, having said allthat, I've been able to replace quite a few LPs I used to have in theirentirety with just the tracks I like, the quality has been fair - thoughI have had to copy using SPDIF some tracks into *.wav to edit some clicksYou could check on Amazon.com and cdnow.com. I know one of themwas offering some downloads for pay. Also, the "new" AudioGalaxymight be something you'd want to look into.

I just can'tget enough of the downloads!!! GO THERE NOW!!!!The ip of the ftp server is on this site!! With the login and the password!There are no banner clicks or anything.... just free!So keep the MuSiC FrEe!!!
