Then after they rant and rave about your music, they say at the end- "ohby the way, I have my own mp3.com website, and i'd appreciate if you'dgive my songs a listen. This is all written generically, so all the guyhas to do is copy and paste the same damn message to every musician hecan with little effort.Naturally, if people fall for the trick, then they download his songs,and he makes money and goes high up the charts, while your own webpagehasn't hardly any downloads.
MP3 SONG DOWNLOADS : they sit around downloading their own songs all day? i've never gotten15 song downloads in a day off all my songs combined, let alone from onefucking song.i say we should start an artist network: mp3.com artists who've nevermade a goddamn dollar! we could even create little graphics & awebring. maybe a mission statement, too, like"we refuse to sell out our integrity to maintain the illusion ofpopularity. we are proud that our music does not conform to the mp3.comcorporate payback for playback standards & are not mainstream enough formp3.com to consider us worthy of their payoffs."of course, the problem there would be that if it took off, it wouldactually increase our web traffic, perhaps enough so that we would earna dollar or 2, negating our right to carry the banner. a self-defeatingprophecy.
MP3 SONG DOWNLOADS : I've borrowed a 4-track recorder from my school and I want to record myband, but first we need the drum track down. So, I've got 3 microphonesthat are usually used for vocals, one of them is a real piece of crapbut the other two are pretty nice and I want some advice on where toposition them on the set.I just did some great 4-track tracking with ONE mic. It was a Sure SM-57, in a small closed room where I teach. I tuned all the drums up as best I could (it wasn't my kit, and I wasn't about to send $ on heads). THIS IS IMPORTANT. You want the best sound on tape you can get. I found that placing the mike in a far corner, somewhat hi (eye level) facing the kit, about 6 feet away, did a great job. If you have crappy mics, it might make sense to use only one or two good ones. If you want to use all three for direct miking, place one near the bass head (probably facing the resonant head if you want more boom), but not too close so you can pick up some general sounds like the bottom heads of the toms. Then one between the snare and hi-hat (important), and then one ambiant room mike to pick up the whole kit. Play around, experiment. Have fun with it! Russell
